The New Checkout Page

Over the past few months, our User Experience team has spent a great amount of time researching ways to simplify the setup and configuration of the Checkout page. If you are collecting money from your event, this page is of extreme importance, and we felt it deserved the full treatment. Our team has interviewed customers, performed usability tests, and studied the event planners of Colorado first hand. The end result of all this research and discovery will be available to you tomorrow morning. We think it is a dramatic improvement, and we hope you agree (but we’d love to hear your feedback either way – comment below).

What changed?

Almost everything. I have put together this comparison and FAQ to help you get friendly with the new layout.

In short: all credit card options can now be found by clicking the Credit Card link, click the Add Payment Method link to add Check and other payment methods, goodbye Advanced section, goodbye Partial Payments, hello super simple setup.

FAQ

What should I do if my event is free?

Nothing. If your event has no fees, your registrants will not be asked for payment information.

Where do I configure credit card types?

All options related to credit card processing can be found by clicking the Credit Cards link in the Payment Methods section.

Where do I select my Payment Gateway?

This option, along with all other options related to credit card processing, can be found by clicking the Credit Cards link in the Payment Methods section (see screenshot above).

Will this change what my registrant see?

No. This change will not change the appearance of your registration form. The Checkout page they see will be the same as it was yesterday (unless you changed something, friend).

Why was Partial Payments removed?

This option was used by less than 1% of our customers, and typically caused confusion among registrants in the few cases where it was used.  That didn’t sound right to us, so we removed it to put an end to that confusion,  clean up the page, and simplify event setup.  If you really, really , really need Partial Payments enabled in your event, contact our Support team.

Where can I learn more about Registration Protection Plus?

Our Active Network Customer Portal contains a wealth of information on this industry-first feature: What is Registration Protection Plus?

Where can I learn more about Service Fee Sharing?

Good question! Service Fee Sharing can help reduce your costs by passing our fees directly to your registrants.

If you have any additional questions about this change, please drop them in the comments section below. I’ll be monitoring the comments closely over the next few weeks, and you will receive a quick reply!

The new page looks great! Looks much easier to use (and cleaner!)

Quick question: Do you have to have a Refund Policy set up to use the Registration Protection?

  2. 2 Nick said at 10:29 am on September 22nd, 2010:

    Thanks for the feedback, Dan.

Concerning your question: Nope, you do not need a refund policy set up to enable Registration Protection Plus.

    Keep the questions coming!

I heard you did some usability studies with customers prior to release. What is the process for becoming involved in usability and/or beta testing?

  4. 4 DeborahAnn said at 11:56 am on October 22nd, 2010:

Something else has been added, and I have people who are not completing the registration because of it. The Verified Visa Bank Card verification process. They didn’t request their Visa to do this, nor do I see a check box to remove this step.

  5. 5 Nick said at 4:12 pm on October 22nd, 2010:

    Hi DeborahAnn,

Thanks for the comment. Verified by Visa is an opt-in program available to all Visa cardholders that provides an additional layer of security during online transactions. RegOnline complies with this program, and requires additional verification steps if the cardholder has enrolled. These additional steps will only display to cardholders who are enrolled in the Verified by Visa program. If the people you mentioned have checked with their bank to verified that they are not enrolled, and continue to see the added verification during registration, please contact our support team at 303-577-5100. More information about the Verified by Visa program can be found here: http://usa.visa.com/personal/security/visa_security_program/vbv/verified_by_visa_faq.html

    Thanks!

Is there a way to eliminate the dollar signs and calculations if your having a free event and the registrant does not need to pay for any item?

  7. 7 Caryl said at 2:38 pm on October 29th, 2010:

For some reason paypal payments don’t seem to be going through anymore. It says that there is an error with the API but the settings are correct in paypal. Is anyone else experiencing this?

  8. 8 Nick said at 4:50 pm on October 29th, 2010:

David: Yes, this will happen automatically. If your event does not have any fees, your registrants will see nothing related to payment.

    Hi Caryl,

I’d follow up with our technical support team. You can find their contact information here: http://forums.regonline.com/

The new page layout looks great and I think it will be easier to use. However, it would be a HUGE help if users could be notified of changes without stumbling across revisions for the first time while frantically trying to perform an urgent task. Thanks for taking the time to make this better.

  11. 11 Nick said at 4:46 pm on November 4th, 2010:

Thanks for the feedback, Faye. We absolutely agree that we need to do a better job of notifying our users of these types of changes, and are trying to find a solution to this at the moment. We are trying to decide if our users would rather have us send emails about upcoming changes, or simply provide notifications within the application. I’d love to hear your opinion on the topic!

Thanks for all your hard work on this. I do not want to put a damper on all the great comments but my event seems to have an issue with how this is set up. Our event is FREE and we do not need to collect payment for attending. I would like to collect payment information for those who say YES to needing air. I also have a reg/attendee type that would not need to see the payment page and I do not see anything where I can choose who sees this and who does not see this. It looks like I need to disable this area since I cannot pick who sees this and who does not see it. Any help here would be appreciated

You say “Our team has interviewed customers, performed usability tests, and studied the wild event planners of Colorado first hand.” I do not see anywhere where you talk to any REGISTRATION managers. Event Planners are not the reg queens that registration managers are. It would behoove you to speak with those who are most familiar with the ins and outs of registration. I do not want to just complain – I would offer my services here to help or to become involved in any usability and/or beta testing?
I am a 15 year registration manager veteran.

  14. 14 Dan said at 10:52 am on November 9th, 2010:

    Andra,
We perhaps used the term “event planners” as more of a blanket statement than a specific job role, no offense intended. We are always looking to work with any and everyone that uses RegOnline and that includes Registration Managers like yourself. If you would like (along with anyone else reading this) you can join our User Group, a group of devoted users that help us improve our product by answering questions and participating in betas. I’ll get some information sent to you by email.

  15. 15 Dan said at 11:37 am on November 9th, 2010:

    Hi there Andie,
Due to some pretty strict rules on how we deal with credit card numbers (namely PCI level 1) we can’t let people collect unencrypted payment information without some additional protections in place. I recommend contacting your account manager or our excellent support team to help you get that set up. They should be able to help with the reg type issues as well.

It doesn’t look like our attendee cc info is being stored. We are opening new sessions today and need to make sure that the cc info previously entered will populate those fields. I have searched the site and can’t find anything that addresses this so any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

  17. 17 Fernanda said at 4:43 am on December 9th, 2010:

    Hello!
I like the new format, well done. But it’s always a problem when the participants will not pay online, so there is no need for this page at all. The problem is that there’s no option to take the page out of the form and it looks awkward to have the Fee Summary there, even if it’s written total amount $0.00. I would appreciate if there was an option to disable this field.
    Thank you.

  18. 18 Charlie said at 1:06 pm on December 21st, 2010:

Can I make a plea on behalf of UK users who want to spell cheque as cheque, not check?

Also, there is no payment method of Bank Transfer – is this Wire Transfer?

Can we have the facility to rename these payment methods to suit our audience?

  19. 19 Dan said at 3:49 pm on January 5th, 2011:

    Hi there Charlie!
You can certainly get those to look like you would like.
For the “Cheque”, just go to the Start tab when editing your registration from and click on “Regional Options” next to Language. In that new dialog, change the language to English (United Kingdom). This won’t change how the backend displays the word, but if you preview your form, you will now see that the option is now spelled like you want.
For “Bank Transfer”, you can add the payment method of “Custom” and then make it say whatever you want it to.

    Hope that helps!

I need to manually change the payment method of some participants since they originally chose wire transfer, but now want to pay by CC. How can I do this?

  21. 21 Kyle said at 10:19 am on May 3rd, 2011:

Hi Jill, thank you for the comment. Here is a link to our help forum, with step by step details on how to manually change the payment method.
